ERÖFFNUNG (OPENING) / NOTTURNO

2020, Italy/France/Germany

Gianfranco Rosi

Rosi filmed for three years in Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria, and Lebanon. He is not interested in war footage, but in the places where people try to live an everyday life: a boy has to earn money, in a school traumatised children draw, a couple goes on a date, and a theatre group in a psychiatric clinic explores the colonial context of Syria. His calmly composed images form a counterpoint to the media's hectic portrayals of life in these areas. Without information about the exact geographical locations, a humanistic mosaic emerges about the collective suffering of all those affected by the war.
