EL BOTÓN DE NÁCAR (THE PEARL BUTTON)
2015, Chile
Patricio Guzmán
In a fascinating stream of images and narratives, Patricio Guzmán connects the dots between cosmology, indigenous mythology and the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. His film recounts how a particularly cruel practice of the 20th-century totalitarian regime came to light and reveals colonial crimes committed against the original inhabitants of Chile. The waters of western Patagonia, depicted in all their magic, connect these events. And the indigenous cultures and languages are shown as something that urgently needs to be preserved for the future.
