EAT BITTER
2023, Central African Republic/China
Ningyi Sun / Pascale Appora-Gnekindy
The Chinese-Central African director duo follow two protagonists, Thomas and CC, during their everyday lives in Bangui, the capital city of one of the poorest countries in the world, the Central African Republic. Thomas, who like many young locals works as a sand diver, is struggling to advance socially. CC hails from China and has come to earn more money – if not more respect – than he would at home as a construction manager. The portrait of these two different workers, which also gives the women in their lives a voice, paints a captivating and empathic picture of an interconnected capitalist world.
