DOLLAR MAMBO
1993, Mexico/Spain
Paul Leduc
Variety theatre and other performances take place in a trashy, glitzy nightclub. A petty criminal and a dancer are falling for each other. Then there are explosions; a harbour worker throws himself to the ground to protect himself. All of a sudden, soldiers occupy the Salon Panama and force the performers to entertain them – until a fatal finale. In December 1989, US forces attacked Panama in an attempt to oust Manuel Noriega. Almost without verbal dialogue, but with dance, music and body language, DOLLAR MAMBO condemns the violence perpetrated by GIs against civilians during the invasion.
