ДНИ ЗАТМЕНИЯ (TAGE DER FINSTERNIS)

1988, USSR

Aleksandr Sokurov

After completing his studies, Dmitrij, a doctor, is sent to the Turkmen city of Krasnovodsk where causal relationships seem to dissolve in the apocalyptic atmosphere. We hear fragments of the Russian, Turkmen, Latin, and Armenian languages. In carefully composed shots, the fragmented narrative switches organically between sepia and colour. And as if by chance, the film touches upon the history of the Crimean Tatars, a homosexual love affair, and the war in Afghanistan. Sokurov settles accounts with the multi-ethnic Soviet state, which in his view is responsible for the loss of national identities.
