CROWRÃ (THE BURITI FLOWER)
2023, Brazil
João Salaviza / Renée Nader Messora
A film not only about, but with Krahô, an indigenous people who live in north-eastern Brazil. Immersive, affecting 16mm shots show connections that run through generations: traumatic memories of white violence are processed using powerful visual elements like fire and earth as well as evocative singing. The threats have never ceased; and neither has the resistance of the Krahô. In 2022, the community is debating whether it makes sense to take part in the wider indigenous protest against Bolsonaro's government in Brasília.
