CHILDREN OF THE MIST
Diem Ha Le
Child marriage is still commonplace in the Hmong minority in the north of Vietnam. Following tradition, 12-year-old Di is kidnapped by a boy. Even though this is not happening entirely against her will, now that the two families are negotiating the dowry, she realises that she does not want to be married as early as her mother and sister. Director Diem Ha Le followed Di for three years for her film debut and established a friendly connection with her. Sometimes, she gets right into the conflict with her camera. This not only observational position allows for a fascinating view from within the family.
