Bishnu returns from Delhi to her home village in the Indian state of Sikkim and is immediately confronted with the expectations of the people around her: when will she finally get married? In a household of four women spanning three generations, it becomes evident just how deeply patriarchal structures are still entrenched. Bishnu no longer fits in; her ideas are different, and her momos – the traditional dumplings – aren’t quite up to par. Drawing on autobiographical elements, Tribeny Rai tells a story of self-determination, class relations and the courage to defy convention.
