BU SAN (GOODBYE, DRAGON INN)

2003, Taiwan

Tsai Ming-liang

A loving ode to the cinema as a lively space: the very last screening in an aging single-screen cinema in Taipei shows the martial arts classic DRAGON INN from 1967. It is against this backdrop that Tsai Ming-liang depicts miniatures full of melancholy and non-verbal humour in perfectly composed camera shots. While the film has a very personal meaning to some in the audience, others came for completely different reasons. Meanwhile, the cashier is looking everywhere for the projectionist. She wants to share her steamed bun with him – for the last time?
