BOROM SARRET
1963, Senegal
Ousmane Sembène
BOROM SARRET is often described as the first film ever shot in Africa by a black African. Ousmane Sembène tells the story in it of a poor man in Dakar who tries to earn a living as a carter. Although he expects to be paid for his services, he has trouble making this clear, so that he often is disappointed and taken advantage of. This short film illustrates that the country’s independence did not solve the population’s problems.
