BORN IN FLAMES

1983, USA

Lizzie Borden

Ten years after a socialist revolution, the US is ruled by a single party. The promise of liberation for women has never been fulfilled. In New York, female pirate radio stations broadcast critical programmes, and a Women’s Army takes to the streets to fight abusive men. When a prominent Black activist dies in police custody, feminist resistance becomes more radical. Black power and queer feminism go hand in hand in this rediscovered gem of guerrilla filmmaking, framed by rebellious music ranging from Billie Holiday to punk.
