BENEATH WHICH RIVERS FLOW

2025, Iraq

Ali Yahya

A poem of expressive images and sound: in the vast marshes of southern Iraq, people live and work, closely integrated into an ecosystem of rivers, reeds and animals. Ibrahim calls this place home, with his family and their water buffalo, to which he is deeply attached. The wet soil in this area, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, has become increasingly dry due to climate change. Representing the many people whose livelihoods have come under threat, Ibrahim observes these changes with a concerned eye.
