БЕЛОЕ ЗОЛОТО (WEISSES GOLD)
1947, USSR
Aleksandr Ivanov
The title WHITE GOLD epitomises the significance of cotton as a resource for the Soviet economy. After all, cotton can be found on five coats of arms for the 15 Soviet republics. Accentuated by epic music, this educational animated film explains the production chain for cotton: its distribution, the expansion of cultivation areas, and its processing into fabric. The cotton plant tap dances and turns into a shining firework. The Aral Sea has been drying up since the 1960s. As this is considered one of the greatest man-made environmental disasters, this amusing film leaves a stale aftertaste.
