AU HASARD, BALTHAZAR (ZUM BEISPIEL BALTHASAR)

1966, France/Switzerland
AU HASARD, BALTHAZAR

Robert Bresson

Balthazar, arguably the most famous donkey in film history, shares his life with Marie. His first years are happy, romping in the hay together with her. But the happiness does not last. He is forced to work as a packhorse and sees Marie being abused by her boyfriend – before he has to endure this violence himself. AU HASARD, BALTHAZAR is certainly one of the first prominent examples of how a non-human being in cinema not only serves as an element of dramatic composition but also as one who has been given his own subjectivity.
