AMANDLA! A REVOLUTION IN FOUR-PART HARMONY
2002, South Africa
Lee Hirsch
In the form of an impressively vivid chronology, this film tells the story of resistance to the apartheid regime in South Africa through music: during the most violent phases of oppression, the black population was forbidden to sing out loud, record songs or own music recordings, and music and singing became a significant part of the mass protests. In AMANDLA! – the title means power in Zulu and Xhosa and was an important slogan – features famous artists such as Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba as well as the Freedom Songs of the many.
