ALTIPLANO

The titular plateau in northern Chile and north-western Argentina is the sole protagonist of this film: its ancient salt plains, lava deserts and colourful lakes combined with a soundscape created from infrasound recordings of volcanoes, geysers and blue whales. For centuries, saltpetre and nitrate were mined here; more recently, the land has been used for thermal energy production. ALTIPLANO is a visually powerful, anti-colonial critique that captures the destruction of nature by humans and brings the scenery to life as a fascinating actor using all the technical means available to analogue film.
