ACOUSTIC OCEAN

2018, Switzerland/Norway

Ursula Biemann

A scientist, explorer and communicator of our current understanding of ecosystems investigates the acoustic ecology of the oceans on the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway using hydrophones and parabolic microphones. The Sami aquanaut installs microphones on the shore and in the dark ocean, waiting for new messages. The seabed is an important space for communication used by many creatures in the deep sea. Due to poor visibility, the sonic dimension is the most important means of navigation in the penumbra of this liquid universe, which is almost completely unknown to us.
