Pier Paolo Pasolini
In his first work as a director, Pasolini takes a look at the low-income suburbs of Rome. The miracolo economico, the economic boom, has not made its way there. Some of the men are pimps, including Vito, who has little mercy for women nor himself. Pasolini's unsparing portrayal of this milieu is uncomfortable – particularly due to its sacral music and visual composition. For the then amateur actor Franco Citti, himself from a poor background, this first leading role was the beginning of a great acting career.
