A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING

Payal Kapadia

Kapadia finds a box with love letters at her film school in Mumbai. They tell the tragic tale of a couple that was separated, because they were members of different castes. Read offscreen as poetic scene setters, these letters form the structure of this record of a time when racism and Hindu nationalism are on the rise under the Modi administration. When the film students become increasingly political and show solidarity with oppressed castes, this film becomes a manifesto while, at the same time, remaining a love letter to cinema.
