LA NOIRE DE…
Ousmane Sembène
A young Senegalese woman, after working as a babysitter for a French family in Dakar, is invited to come with them to France as a governess. But in the West she is nothing but the black girl for everyone. Robbed of her freedom, her dignity and her identity, the only thing left to her is a radical last act of defiance. Ousmane Sembène’s feature film debut was one of the first African feature films overall and is based on a newspaper report about the suicide of an African housemaid. Sembène turned it into a parable about neocolonialism and the new slave trade.
