TALK: Explicit parallels: What do film & comics share?

Stadtbibliothek Innsbruck | 05.06.2023 17:00-19:00

In the comic TREIBEN (Edition Moderne, 2022), Berlin artist Bernadette Schweihoff tells the story of a Berlin couple's journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway in enigmatic images. HYTTI NRO 6 by Juho Kuosmanen sends two strangers by train towards the Arctic Circle. Film and comics meet in the explicit. What distinguishes them? We discuss this with Bernadette Schweihoff, among others, who also reads from TREIBEN.

BOOK: In her book debut, treiben, Berlin-based artist Bernadette Schweihoff tells the story of a Berlin couple's journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway in enigmatic images. Over thousands of kilometers, through the middle of the Russian expanse, we follow the looks and the thoughts of the narrator. And so the journey in TREIBEN is also an inner one - a contemplation on female desire, on identity and intimacy. "Bernadette Schweihoff's intimate travelogue not only takes us to deepest Siberia, it also delves into her own world of thoughts. Feminine, sensual, full of exciting nuances, touching characters and a precise and loving eye for all the little details that make a journey unforgettable and unique. Between the pages of the book, you can feel the bone-chilling cold, the endless expanse, the astounding beauty, and you think you catch a whiff of the Russian soul. In soft blues and warm reds, however, this powerful début also tells of the difference between the female and male perspectives, of female desire, the search for freedom, and of how hard it is to 'distinguish fact from truth' (Sophy Roberts). Impressive." Alke Wendlandt, Literaturhaus Munich (Source: Edition Moderne)

FILM: HYTTI NRO 6 (PART NO. 6) by JUHO KUOSMANEN 2021, Finland/Germany/Estonia/Russian Federation LEOKINO 2, Tuesday, 6.6.2023, 5:10 p.m. Shy Finnish archaeology student Laura is determined to visit the famous rock paintings in icy Murmansk to put an unhappy romance behind her. In compartment No. 6, she meets her fellow passenger: Ljoha is a miner, hard-drinking and loud. They have to come to terms with each other in a very confined space.  To the sound of "Voyage, voyage" we are taken on an atmospheric, wintry train journey in the late 1990s. A lovingly raw, melancholic-comic road movie on rails, inspired by the novel of the same name by Rosa Liksom.
