The film is inspired by an episode in the life of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence in 1476 when the 24-year-old painting apprentice was imprisoned for a short time, and was set in the hostile environment of a cell that he had to share with two common criminals. The question in the centre of the story is: How can one survive barbarism when the only means you have is art? The director gives barbarism two grotesque faces: a thief and a murderer. Thank god the young da Vinci possesses certain survival techniques.
