Remake, Remix, Rip-off

A Turkish Tarzan, Rambo or Dracula? Istanbul’s Yeşilçam cinema style had it all. Magnificent and successful B-movies that shamelessly and illegally copied and reinvented western blockbusters. Outlandish plots, overacting, and dangerous stunts. A world of excess. Utilising many film excerpts, Cem Kaya takes us on a nostalgic journey through the golden era of Turkish trash cinema.

SALVADOR ALLENDE

I remember September 11, 1973, somber day on which America instigated a coup d’etat to knock down the peace-loving and democratic revolution which had been built in my faraway country Chile by eleminating ist President of the Republic, Salvador Allende, that „son-of-a-bitch“ as Nixon liked to refer to him. The urge to return to this atypical man, revolutionary and fanatic of democracy to the point of suicide, came over me for obvious historical reasons, but also for its cruel actuality. SI-GUERIKI, LA REINE-MÈRE (SI-GUERIKI, THE QUEEN MOTHER)

The director was born 33 years ago in nothern Benin into a tribe of great and fierce warriors observing very strict traditions. He returns to his village after spending ten years in Europe. His father is dead. He discovers the living conditions of his sisters and nieces, and especially the place his mother holds today. During his childhood she was just one of his father’s wives, a shadow in the house; today she bears the «Si-Gueriki», she is the queen mother. With this intimate and personal film, Idrissou Mora-Kpaï casts an eye – from the inside and the outside at the same time – on his origins and his culture. The men of the Wassangari tribe, once great and noble warriors, have succeeded in maintaining an olden-day patriarchy within their clan. The beginning of the film is pompous and conventional, like a shirt with an overly starched collar! Gradually the director sets his camera in place, listens and changes. His questions are simple and direct, as are the answers. He discovers his mother, an impressive character, and the «queen’s» place that she now holds. He is also confronted with another of his father’s wives, as well as with his sisters and nieces. read more

After 50 years and 450 billion euros of development aid some African regions are poorer than before. Some regions are poorer after the aid than before. Using examples in Kenya, Mali and Tanzania, the film shows how development aid goes wrong. Dam projects, for instance, which foremost provide commissions for foreign companies, or food aid that encourages passivity and destroys the local economy. SÜSSES GIFT is a plea not for an end to international solidarity, but quite the opposite: Africa should at last do business itself – not just its helpers. read more

TEZA

The film is about 30 years of Ethiopian history in which Imperialism was followed by Marxism and the people’s frenzy remained the same. Anberber has studied in Germany and returns post-graduate to Ethiopia. He is full of hope that he can support his country with his newly acquired knowledge. His pretentious attitude derives from his breeding and education where he was in contact with political progressives and activists. Unexpectedly his destiny pushes him right into the collective massacre. It’s a story about hope and disillusionment, about foreignness and homeland.
