India is the most productive filmmaking country in the world, and our Alps are becoming ever more the favourite location for Indian films. Indian technicians, costume designers and makeup artists carry their equipment to the most beautiful waterfalls, lakes and alpine meadows, which are used as a background for melodramatic love stories and dance interludes which to Western eyes seem as kitsch as you can get. Floating between cowpats and rustic farms, the pining lovers in saris are beguiled by lofty music. The film industry in India has discovered Switzerland and Swiss tourism has discovered the Indians – for our tourism, they are a gift from heaven.
